Mary Lee Brady, Ph.D.

We relatively sure that Kansas was born at Shirley Plantation to her mother Nancy Primus Lee, but we have no clue as to who was the father of her and siblings. The name "Kansas" as a first name prompted us to consider possibilities and relationships to Williams and Frank offspring born around 1815 and later used by grand-daughter Nancy Banister Lee.  There is no evidence of the name being used otherwise.

Further research is required relative to Kansas Lee, apparently moved to Maryland by time of the 1880 census. The possibility exists that Kansas may also have been born a twin to Moses Lee.  Relationship is confirmed by the fact that Nancy Banister Lee named one of her daughters after a beloved Aunt "Kansas." 

Possibility is that she was married to a Lee killed in the Civil War, one of over 45,000 U.S. Colored Troops killed in the fighting.
