Henry Crosswhite, born abt 1835 or perhaps late as 1850 served in the U.S. Army Colored Troops during the Civil War having joined a regiment in Kentucky which was one of the border states that remained loyal to the union though many residents were slave owners, and thus exempted from the Emancipation Proclamation of January 1863.  To the best of our knowledge, Henry Crosswhite is the only person of that surname who served in the U.S. Colored Troops and cause us to believe that he was likely the father of the Ohio Crosswhites, and if not most likely an uncle.

To help avoid and/or prevent  conscription of family members in Union forces, many slave owners were able to pay for the enlistment of Black men in their stead, and the records of such are generally available in the archived records of the units in which enlisted.
