U.S. Census data collected in 1880 reveal that Spencer Jones believed at that time his birth occurred in Virginia, albeit some descendents indicate his birth in Kentucky was as occurred with his brother Samuel.  Census and other data indicates Spencer was indeed born in Virginia and likely sired by Jacob Flournoy who owned and brought him and his mother to Kentucky.

We are inclined to believe that Spencer Flournoy likely adopted and raised grand-children or others as opposed to census data reflecting most of the above births occurring after his release from slavery at age 85, and in his later years and death that occurred in 1882.  Possibilities are that one or more of the U.S. Colored Troops listed below may have been one of his offspring and with offspring living with Spencer at time of the 1880 census.
