District of Columbia Census Data

Sorry We are still collecting data

We have a special interest in determining if any descendents of William and Frank Lee were employed as slaves or freemen in the construction of the capitol and other buildings.

The cornerstone of the United States Capitol was laid in 1797 and the building was first used in 1800.

It was enlarged between 1807 and 1863, when the dome pictured here was completed and the building assumed its present appearance. National Archives  "U. S. Capitol Under Construction, 1857," Microsoft® Encarta® Encyclopedia 99.

The Lee descendents of William and Frank Lee were skilled workers so far as we know, ... either as livery in the delivery of materials and goods, shoemakers, food preparation and the other tasks required by Virginia's aristocrats.
