| Evelyn Hill, born abt 1826 is believed to have been a relative of William Hill born abt 1842 who was the grand-father of Cora Lee Hill born in 1907. Research indicates that she gave birth to Green Hill Atkins about 1842; and according to William Atkins, ... he, Green and other brothers moved first to Roanoke, Salem and later West Virginia after slavery. It is possible that Evelyn Hill did not live to see emancipation from slavery and after her death, ... husband Henry Atkins married a woman named Nancy and procreated additional children. We are not comfortable in our knowledge about origins of Evelyn or Nancy but aware that during days and years after slavery were amazing and often a mass change in racial identities of ex-slaves.
Click below link to Henry Adkins to read more of our speculations about both Evelyn and Nancy who may have been sisters in the coal fields of West Virginia, and able to pass for White among people and places who did not know their heritage.
