Professor John P. Davis, the great Pan-African scholar during days, weeks, months and years of "the American Negro" references among scholars, .... compiled a reference book for fellow scholars to use in the 1950-1960 era in teaching the new generations pouring onto the nation's campus communities.

The book was intended to be conversation primer for folks who thought they knew enough about generations of African heritage in the Americas, and served the purpose of awakening many as to how much they did not even begin to understand.  And, of course like every other scholar of African heritage since at least George Washington Williams, he was categorized and classified by many White scholars and media masters as "crazy" or anti-American and even a Marxist agitator, a troubling threat.
