| One thing we believe for certain about Martin Hemings is that both he and his older sister Mary were fathered by Abram. It appears they were both able to read, write and count in services to Thomas Jefferson; and, we assume Jefferson's wife likely taught or encouraged it before death of John Wayles in 1773. http://wiki.monticello.org/mediawiki/index.php/Martin_Hemings A review of Jefferson's Farm-book and other data indicates he was used as a household servant, butler and likely so-called additional body servant to Thomas Jefferson, running his errands and performing household shopping. The same sources cause us to believe he fathered at least one of Betty Heming's grandchildren. Other reference information below is extracted from Professor Fawn Brody's book "Thomas Jefferson, An Intimate History." |
