Mary Lee Brady, Ph.D.
| | We are inclined to believe that William Adkins below, regardless of whether or not his father was Robert Adkins born in England or Joseph Adkins, ... was the source of African heritage slaves in Virginia with the surname of Adkins/Atkins. Our interests are not so much about the lineage of slave owners but the locations and sources of people they enslaved who would use the surname of Adkins/Atkins. | William ADKINS (AFN:HP86-FT) | | | Born: | 1690 | | Place: | , Henrico, Va | | Died: | 1754/1774 | | Place: | , Goochland, Va | | Married: | 17 Jan 1716 | | Place: | , Montgomery, Va | | | Father: | Joseph ADKINS (AFN:1L3T-JHV) | | Mother: | Mary DAVIDSON (AFN:1L3T-JBT) |

The above map affords geographer views as to British westward movement of settlers and slaves beginning with the Tidewater area plantations in the 17th century. Keep in mind the Piedmont lands occupied by Native Americans flowed south down through the Carolinas and the Appalachian Mountain chain all the way south through Tennessee to Alabama. As the settlers moved west into counties such as Goochland west of modern day Richmond area, ... they were doing so by purchasing quit claim land deeds issued by the British crown whether or not occupied by Native Americans. Cherokee and other native inhabitants were bewildered and forced by colonial militia (organized by British governors) to evacuate lands they claimed as their homelands. |
