The total number of Black and Mulatto Lowry offspring escaped from the Lowry holdings in Bedford County and other parts of Virginia were sufficient to fill at least one Union Army platoon.  In fact, without backs and brawn of young Blacks the plantation owners were severely hampered in filling their heavy wagons, barges and rail cars with market produce of tobacco and other goods for shipments desired.

Our research indicates that John Lowry, a white confederate killed in battles around Richmond, was the likely father of mulatto offspring such as Lee Lowry who was subsequently raised in the post-Civil War household of his White uncle.  We make this note to point out that life before and after the Civil War was both complex and secretive about relationships past and present.
