The 1880 census affirms existence of Matilda Lee who we believe was the one and same Matilda listed on George Washington's inventory of slaves in 1799 and likely at least seven years of age and used as a spinner. It would appear that she was also one of the unfortunate slaves of George and Martha Washington chosen for sale after his death. Again, if Aggie was her mother, ... she was a dowry slave to the Custiss Estate and subject to being sold to a buyer in North Carolina where she apparently gave birth to a son around 1840 that she named "William Lee." The Lee household below apparently settled in Pittsylvania County of southwestern, Virginia which is in the Blue Ridge Mountain chain and not far from western North Carolina.
