Hi Tim,

My PANGBURN ancestors were the only African American coal miners I could find in Jefferson Township, Allegheny County, PA, in the 1860 Census. However, I found the following in the 1860 Census for Elizabeth Township, Allegheny County, PA:

Thomas WALLACE, age 21, coal miner, born in PA, Roll: M653_1065, page 228.

Alex MARTIN, age 51, coal miner, ditto, ditto, page 240.

Thomas SIMMONS, age 51, coal miner, ditto, ditto, page 269.

Thomas SIMMONS, age 21, coal miner, ditto, ditto, ditto.

William LARUE, age 25, coal miner, ditto, ditto, page 311.

James LARUE, age 28, ditto.

Simon MARTIN, age unclear, ditto.

Alex MARTIN, age 24, ditto.

Isaac MARTIN, age 33, ditto.

There may have been others, but limiting my search on ancestry.com by race, I noticed that the category "colored" only selected those individuals whose race was identified as "B" for black. Therefore, if the census taker wrote "M" for mulatto, that person was not on the list generated. So, at least 9 other African American males in Jefferson and Elizabeth townships were coal miners in 1860.

Regards,
Sandra
