Lewis Jackson, born abt.1844 and served in the 40th Regiment of U.S. Colored Troops operating in and around western Virginia population centers and railway junctions like Roanoke, ... we speculate may have been the grand-father of Asa Jackson who around 1918 married Evelyn Kyle Atkins in Salem, Virginia.  There were many men of African heritage who joined, fought and died using the surname of Jackson during the American Civil War.
