Adaline Frog was the daughter of Easter Frog and an unknown father that we suspect may have been an African-American male with the surname of Hill.  Our suspicions are based upon the fact that William Hill, father of Cora Lee Hill Atkins and other family members always insisted the Hills and Frog's were related and thus cousins.

Oral history has it that she was the first woman to be married in the John Wesley AME Church in Roanoke County.

So far as her enlightenment, education and emotions would allow her to understand, she believed that her freedom was given to her at age 17-18 years by the Dillard family, indicating to us that she was likely a free colored person indentured under indenture that was cancelled in 1867 pursuant Virginia law.  The Civil War had ended in 1865 and technically all persons listed as slaves had been freed pursuant the Emancipation Proclamation issued in January 1863; ignored by rebels hoping to win the war and keep their slaves and indentured servants by law.

But, most indentured servants viewed themselves as little more than slaves under Virginia laws enforced until removed after the Civil War.

Her future husband Charles Kyle and his brothers who had fought in the Union forces that forced the Dillard and other slave owners to relinquish their legal rights to own human beings as chattel.
