| Julia Ann Hemings, born 1851 to Mary (Polly) and Madison Hemings died in 1866 a year before her mother's death in 1867. Our assumptions are that she was named in honor of Julia Ann Isaacs who was the daughter of Nancy Hemings and David Isaacs. Julia Ann Hemings Isaacs, born 1814 We do not know what caused her early death but dare not ignore fact she was born and lived a life hopefully not in pain. Her name and unwritten story is more documentation and indication that Nancy Hemings West was the Aunt Nancy of Madison and Eston Hemings' and her daughter Julia Ann was a known favorite cousin. Our view is that her father Madison and mother Polly were likely greatly saddened by confirmation their son Thomas Hemings was dead, ... and perhaps unaware that Julia and her siblings at home were also dangerously depressed. The great war had just killed 2.5 percent of the United States population and all her teenage friends were affected one way or another. And, like all great wars, it would take another generation of life regenerated for "Mother Nature" to rebalance the young male to young female population ratio. There was relief that it had ended, but not a lot of joy was to be found in a small village town in Ross County, Ohio. Yes, the war was over but not the dying and suffering, especially among the four million newly freed ex-slaves living in the former rebel states like Virginia. During the winter of 1866, many who were recently free suffered and died, many found frozen to death along the highways and byways with no "Good Samaritans" in sight. In memory of year 1866, when Julia Ann Hemings died, we have decided to copy and post an article by Professor Mary Farmer-Kaiser of the University of Louisiana.
